Create perfect, golden French toast quickly using common pantry items. This simple recipe yields slices with crisp edges and a soft, custardy center every time you cook.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 large slices of bread (Texas Toast or Brioche work well)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk (whole or 2%)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon butter, for the griddle

Instructions

  1. In a shallow dish large enough to hold a slice of bread, whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and sugar until fully combined. This creates your foolproof French toast batter.
  2. Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat. Add the butter and let it melt until it sizzles slightly.
  3. Dip one slice of bread into the egg mixture, allowing it to soak for about 10 to 15 seconds per side. Do not over-soak, as this prevents sogginess.
  4. Place the soaked bread onto the hot, buttered skillet. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes per side, until the French toast is golden brown and cooked through.
  5. Remove the cooked French toast from the skillet and keep warm while you cook the remaining slices, adding more butter to the pan as needed.
  6. Serve your classic cinnamon toast immediately with your favorite toppings.

Notes

  • For extra fluffy French toast, use slightly stale or thicker-cut bread.
  • If you prefer a richer flavor, substitute half of the milk with half-and-half.
  • Dust with powdered sugar or serve with maple syrup for a sweet breakfast treat.
