Ingredients
Scale
1 large head of broccoli (about 1 pound)
1/2 cup water
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon black pepper
Instructions
Prepare the broccoli: Wash the head of broccoli. Cut the florets into uniform, bite-sized pieces. You can include the peeled and sliced stem if you prefer.
Set up for steaming: Pour 1/2 cup of water into a large skillet or pot that has a tight-fitting lid. Place a steamer basket inside the pot, ensuring the water level is below the bottom of the basket.
Steam the broccoli: Bring the water to a boil over medium-high heat. Place the broccoli florets into the steamer basket. Cover the pot tightly. Reduce the heat to medium and steam for 4 to 6 minutes.
Check for doneness: Test the broccoli with a fork. You want it to be tender when pierced but still offer slight resistance (tender-crisp). If it is too firm, cover and steam for 1 more minute.
Make the drizzle: While the broccoli steams, melt the butter in a small saucepan over low heat. Add the minced garlic and cook for about 30 seconds until fragrant; do not let the garlic brown. Remove from heat and stir in the lemon juice, salt, and pepper.
Finish and serve: Transfer the steamed broccoli to a serving dish. Pour the lemon-garlic butter drizzle over the hot broccoli. Toss gently to coat. Serve immediately as a healthy side dish idea.
Notes
For microwave vegetable steaming, place broccoli and 2 tablespoons of water in a microwave-safe bowl. Cover tightly with a lid or plastic wrap (vent one corner). Microwave on high for 3 to 4 minutes until tender-crisp.
To achieve bright green broccoli technique, plunge the steamed florets into an ice bath immediately after cooking for 1 minute, then drain well. This stops the cooking process.
If you prefer a richer flavor, substitute the lemon juice with 1 teaspoon of low-sodium soy sauce for a garlic soy drizzle.
