Create a creamy, savory French onion dip that surpasses any mix. This recipe focuses on deeply caramelized onions for rich, authentic flavor, perfect for parties or game day snacking.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup sour cream, full fat
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise, full fat
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder

Instructions

  1. Heat butter and olive oil in a large, heavy-bottomed skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions, sugar, salt, and pepper.
  2. Cook the onions slowly, stirring occasionally, for 40 to 50 minutes. Reduce heat to medium-low as they begin to brown. You want the onions to become deep golden brown and very soft, concentrating their flavor.
  3. Remove the caramelized onions from the heat and let them cool completely, about 30 minutes.
  4. In a medium bowl, combine the cooled caramelized onions, sour cream, mayonnaise, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and onion powder.
  5. Mix all ingredients together until fully combined and smooth.
  6. Cover the dip and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or preferably overnight, to allow the flavors to meld.
  7. Serve your crowd pleasing dip cold with potato chips or fresh vegetables.

Notes

  • For the deepest flavor, do not rush the caramelization process; low and slow heat is key to unlocking the natural sweetness of the onions.
  • You can make the caramelized onions up to three days ahead and store them in the refrigerator.
  • If you prefer a slightly tangier dip, substitute 1/4 cup of the sour cream with plain Greek yogurt.
